Human Interaction: The Life Skill That Will Never Die

When I sat down to begin this blog post, Google Docs prompted me to “Start writing with Gemini”. Artificial intelligence has officially taken over. And it’s definitely here to stay.

A lot of the conversations I have with friends these days involve the overall dread we feel at the current state of the world.

Will AI take our jobs? Why are companies forcing their employees to use AI more and more? Why are they tracking our use of AI? Is it so that they can take away our jobs? What bad thing will happen next?

It’s not a fun feeling.

I just spent the last week of my life staffing the EMS Expo for our client the Michigan Association of Ambulance Services. We had over 300 people in attendance and I was stationed at the registration desk for three straight days welcoming attendees, answering questions, providing directions — all with a smile on my face.

And I was exhausted.

I realized that in my day to day life, I’m typically spending 8 hours a day staring at a screen. Even when I have meetings and I am talking to people, they’re virtual.

But it was nice to be out in the world, interacting with people and using my interpersonal skills that seem to become less and less important each day.

Even though I’m supposed to be the young and hip one on the Resch team, I have a downright boomer attitude when it comes to AI. I honestly avoid it at all costs. I’m afraid if I use it too much I’m going to lose the skills I’ve worked the last 10 years to build!

I can write a social post. I can write a blog. I can design a mean graphic. Can ChatGPT do it in 1/16 of the time and probably do it better? Yes.

But I am committed to creating. Until the robots drag the laptop from my cold dead hands, I will be able to write a paragraph, damnit.

I choose to stay on the bright side and believe that AI won’t be able to steal all of our jobs. I choose to believe that I can still provide value by being a good human being — today and for decades to come.

I’m kind. I have empathy. I’m pretty dang good at small talk (just ask my Trader Joe’s cashier). So take that, robots!

I’m not saying we can’t utilize these AI tools to make our day to day lives a bit easier. I mean if everyone else is doing it, we probably should too.

But maybe every third blog post you try writing it yourself.

Or maybe you pick up the phone and call your friend this evening.

Go on a walk and breathe in some fresh air.

With the way AI is destroying our planet, who knows how much longer we’ll have it! HA! Okay, I’m done.
