Don’t Underestimate the Power of Self-Care

If you’re anything like me, you always have a list of things to get done. Making a to-do-list is the only way I keep my busy life organized and how I remember what needs to be done. While this Type-A personality trait makes me productive, it also makes it easy for me to forget the importance of taking care of myself, in all aspects of my life.

I have made many attempts to focus on myself in the past, but as busy life between work and family crept back in… those efforts would slip to the bottom or even off my list. This continually left me exhausted and burned out, which wasn’t good for anyone, especially me. That’s why earlier this year, I made the commitment to prioritize time for myself. That doesn’t always mean a huge time investment, but every single day, I try to do something for me.

This has ranged from getting a massage or pedicure, working out, and simply just watching a new show before bed at night. By focusing on my self-care, which I had for so long chalked up as something I didn’t have time for, I feel better and I’m a better employee, mom and wife. Who knew, taking care of yourself could have such an impact.

And one more piece of advice from this recovering workaholic, shut your computer and go home! I used to be a work-at-night to catch up on projects kind of girl. It wasn’t until I made a concerted effort to leave the work until the morning that I realized what a toll it was taking on me. Leaving work at work, whether literally or figuratively, is an important piece of self-care too, because everyone needs a break!

This summer and beyond, take time for yourself, you won’t regret it!
