Everybody Loves Matt Resch
It’s not National Boss’s Day, and I’m not trying to get a raise. It is, however, Matt’s birthday, and I figured, this is as good a time as any to recognize him.
Everybody Loves Matt Resch. In a town so divisive in so many ways, I’ve yet to meet anyone who doesn’t love Matt. Across party lines, clients, and even our own industry competitors, Matt is highly respected and universally adored.
When I run into people who know Matt, they always tell me “Matt’s the best!” and “You’re so lucky to work with him” – and I tell them, yes, I know. I am, and I don’t take it for granted.
Matt’s a great human, and Matt’s a really, really great boss.
5 Reasons Why Everybody Loves Matt Resch (but especially why his employees do):
He hath no ego: Even though Everybody Loves Matt Resch, he really doesn’t act like it. He gets calls frequently from important people asking him for advice about things with serious consequences, and he takes it in stride. He might shop at the boujie new downtown Lansing hotspot Craig Ryan, but other than that, he’s just one of us. He listens, he asks us for input, I think he even flies economy sometimes. He’s been wildly successful over his career, but while he trumpets our professional successes, he tends to downplay his own success and popularity. In other words, he doesn’t let it go to his head (except maybe that one time there was a drink at Envie named after him).
He has great ideas: We often joke internally that the old, rusty, PR part of our office relies on the youth for fresh ideas and innovation. But Matt is impressive because he has been in this business for so long, and yet he constantly churns out new ideas. New tactics, new ways of doing things. Just because he’s been successful, he doesn’t rest on his laurels. He thinks outside the box for clients, and it shows.
He’s chill: When has micromanaging ever worked for anyone, anyway? Matt treats us like adults. He trusts that we know what we’re doing, and that we’ll get it done. He doesn’t require constant check-ins, project updates, or nitpick our work. And it makes us want to work harder, and be better. Trust is motivating when it comes from the top. We love working for Matt because he truly believes in our work as individuals, and as a collective.
He’s funny: Matt doesn’t take himself too seriously, which is important in a town where a lot of people take themselves incredibly seriously and some of the issues we work on can be heavy lifts. Matt’s supremely witty, and can always lighten the mood even during demanding times at work. He doesn’t let any of us take ourselves too seriously, either, and by that I mean he does make fun of us when opportunities present themselves, most recently in the form of Sean’s mustache.
He’s loyal: Matt thanks us for our work, which he doesn’t actually have to do since he pays us to do it. But, he appreciates us and shows it. He backs us up, makes sure we have everything we need to get our jobs done, and genuinely cares when we have personal stuff, family stuff, or just tough, yucky life stuff that comes up.
Everybody Loves Matt Resch. But not everybody gets to work for him. Lucky us, and Happy Birthday, Matt! 🎉
Okay, there is one person who says Matt is their second favorite Resch in Lansing. But I’m not naming names.
